MUST READ TRAVEL MEMOIRS

Being a millennial who lives in Toronto, I have resigned myself to the fact that I will never own my own home. Unless of course, I happen to win the lottery. I spend all my money on travelling now, and when I have nothing planned, the itch can only be scratched by diving into a travel memoir.

I prefer stories written by women. Certain circumstances - *cough* the patriarchy - forces a woman to travel differently.

To experience differently.

To see layers upon layers.

To lock eyes with one another and feel that recognition of womanhood regardless of where you are in the world.

But I digress. Below is a list of my favourite travel memoirs (in no particular order).

1. Love With A Chance Of Drowning - Torre DeRoche

What do you get when you mix a woman who is terrified of water, a sailboat and the Pacific Ocean?

2. A Year Without Makeup - Stephanie Yoder

Blog entry style writing makes this little book a quick read when you need to devour something in an hour.

3. A Thousand New Beginnings - Kristin Addis

Also blog style - but much more fleshed out - Kristin quit her job and her boyfriend, to set off for Southeast Asia.

4. How Not To Travel The World - Lauren Juliff

Accident Prone? Check. Afraid of everything under the sun? Check.

5. What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding - Kristin Newman

Funny and entertaining and yet not for everybody. Skip this one if you aren't interested in reading about (lots of) sex on vacation.

6. The Lost Girls - Jennifer Baggett, Holly C. Corbett & Amanda Pressner

Friendship. Milestones. Romance. Backpacks. Illnesses. Accomplishments.

7. Tales Of A Female Nomad -  Rita Golden Gelman

This book is a challenge. I went from severely disliking Rita, to being in awe of her. If you like full culture immersion, you need to add this to your library.

Wild, and Eat. Pray. Love are my favorite, but I also love the Long Way Round and Long Way Down series by Charlie Boorman and Ewan MacGregor too, even though they’re men, the perspective they give while travelling through all those countries, some developed more than others is amazing.
